Fall 4-0 in final
The Lady Warrior soccer team suffered its first regular season loss since September 20, 2014 in the final of the Socorro Cup to Cleveland High School’s JV team and came away with 2nd place in the tournament. The Lady Warriors had gotten to the final by defeating Moriarty 4-3 in the semi-final game played earlier on Saturday morning. Junior Danielle Moore and freshman Kayla Botko each scored two goals in the win. The Lady Warriors led 3-1 in the second half before Moriarty came back to tie the score at 3-3. In the last 15 minutes the Lady Warriors kept the pressure on the Moriarty defense and Moore finally broke through with the game winning goal with four minutes remaining in the game.
In the final the Lady Warrior fought to a 0-0 halftime tie, but in the second half Cleveland maintained consistent pressure on the Socorro defense and scored about 3 minutes into the second half and then again 12 minutes into the half. Socorro did have some opportunities in the final 15 minutes of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net and allow two more goals to account for the final 4-0 score. The loss drops Socorro to 2-1 on the season. The loss ended a 30 game regular season unbeaten streak dating back to a 3-2 to Robertson on September 20, 2014. It was the first shutout the Lady Warriors suffered since a 2-0 playoff loss to Robertson on November 6, 2014. It was the first regular season shutout since Valencia shutout the Lady Warriors 4-0 on August 26, 2014. The Lady Warriors will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Pojoaque for a 3 p.m. match.
