The Socorro Warriors had their first test under new coach Andrew McCraw and passed with flying colors.  The Warriors scored touchdowns on 6 of 9 possessions in the game while holding the Shiprock scoreless and allowing only 3 first downs.  The Warriors scored all of their touchdowns on the ground getting 3 touchdowns from senior Michael Armijo.  Armijo had touchdown runs of 54, 20 and 15 yards while racking up 218 yards on 20 carries.  SophomoreThomas Padilla had 81 yards on 5 carries with a touchdown run of 44 yards.  Junior Justin Angel had 4 carries for 59 yards with a 23 yard touchdown.  Senior Gabriel Sanchez had 36 yards on 6 carries with a 3 yard touchdown.  Sophomore quarterback Clint Wellborn performed well in his first game as a starter carrying the ball 7 times for 36 yards.  The Warriors threw the ball only 4 times on the night picking up 17 yards on a single completion to Justin Angel.

The Warrior defense completely stymied Shiprock allowing only 4 first downs in nine possessions for the Chieftains.  The Warrior secondary had a field day with the Chieftain passing attack picking off 5 passes in 15 attempts while giving up only 4 receptions.  Thomas Padilla had two interceptions.  The Warriors defense of the Chieftain running was just as impressive with the Warriors giving up only 19 yards on 25 carries.  Shiprock had 10 plays in which they had lost yardage or no gain.

A good crowd was on hand to see the beginning of the McCraw era and had to be pleased with what they saw in the opening night performance of the Warriors.  The hometown fans will have another chance to see the Warriors next week as Tularsoa roll into town next Friday night to face the 1-0 Warriors.  Tularosa will be coming in off of a 12-0 home loss to Hot Springs.  That game can be heard on Mine Country 102.1 with pre-game at 6:30 with kickoff at 7 p.m.
